Former Media Octopus and LBM chief Andrew Colwell has become the first ever managing director of independent life insurance broker Insurance Doctors UK, as part of the firm’s ambitious growth strategy.
Set up in 2014 by former LBM colleagues Michael Woolfe and David Hill, Insurance Doctors offers customers tailored policies based on their circumstances, including life insurance, critical illness cover, over 50s plans and mortgage and income protection.
Although it is independent, its partners include Aviva, Scottish Widows, LV=, Legal & General and Aegon. The firm also runs the Insurance Doctors Rewards, a loyalty scheme which enables customers to gain discounts at leading firms including Boots, AO.com, Halfords, Planet Hollywood and Pizza Express.
Colwell has joined the firm following a three-month spell as a marketing and business consultant, having left the Media Octopus earlier in the year.
He started his career at Bank of Scotland, then joined Trinity Mirror (now Reach) in 1994, ultimately becoming head of marketing development. Colwell then spent two years at Energis as head of e-business marketing, before taking up the role of marketing director at LBM (now Convergys).
During his tenure at LBM, the firm achieved rapid growth, with turnover rising from £8m to £55m in five years; Colwell was also part of the exit management team who sold the business for £50m in 2007.
After running his own agency and a spell at McDowall (now OMS), Colwell joined the Media Octopus in 2014 as head of strategy, and was instrumental in a raft of new business wins, including The Co-Op, Royal Albert Hall and Innovate UK.
Insurance Doctors director Michael Woolfe said: “In the past three months, Andrew has already made great progress and has had a major impact on the business and the team. We have significant ambitions and are delighted that Andrew will lead the charge for us to achieve them.”
