Roll up, roll up for Foxy’s Blue Monday survival guide

“How does it feel to treat me like you do? When you’ve laid your hands upon me; And told me who you are.” Yep, like New Order’s classic, Blue Monday is looming large again.

Now, while no-one has a clue what Bernard Sumner was banging on about, least of all him, apparently help is at hand on how to get through the year’s “most depressing day”. And we are going to need extra help, too, as it just so happens to coincide with that fat orange-faced idiot and his new chums arriving at the White House, so God help us (if only he existed!)

On the upside, I came out of “McKelvey’s Big Birthday Weekend” intact. Thankfully, he couldn’t make it on account of some spurious death rattle and pounding headache virus, but we had a great night celebrating the fact that he is ever closer to retirement. Oh how we laughed and laughed and laughed some more – team morale is as high as a kite.

And that, according to no lesser luminary than Dr Sanjay Popat, a chartered psychologist specialising in occupational stress, well-being and mental health, could just help us survive Blue Monday as he reckons even a small number of colleagues who express happiness can spread positivity throughout teams and the organisation.

Happiness not only boosts morale and productivity but also fosters a sense of community and belonging among team members, boosting productivity.

He explained: “The precise ways in which happiness is thought to influence productivity remain an avenue for future research, but it is theorised to be down to three central mechanisms.

“Firstly, being in a good mood (i.e. being happy) improves our thinking and processing skills, driving higher efficiency, communication, and creativity.

“Secondly, being happier is likely to lead to greater enjoyment of upcoming tasks, heightening the motivation potential of employees and leading to productivity gains as they are more likely to engage with, and subsequently, complete their tasks.

“Lastly, a positive mood may well increase social capabilities as people perceive happier employees as more approachable, leading to greater productivity on tasks involving colleagues or customers.”

So, I hear you ask, how are going to keep our peckers up this Monday?

It’s simples my dears, we’re going to lock out our misery guts boss, roll up our sleeves and drink our way through it… Bottoms up!
