A couple who ran what is claimed to be Britain’s first sex call centre from a property in Greenwich have been jailed for nearly four years and a half years after admitting charges of controlling prostitution for gain and perverting the course of justice.
Southwark Crown Court heard that the couple – Kamil Niewiadomski and Ewa Nosal – ran the call centre in Haddo Street, Greenwich, where Polish nationals took bookings for sex with women.
The pair lured Polish women to work as escorts to the UK, where they were sexually exploited at a string of brothels across London, in Tower Hamlets, Old Kent Road, Southwark, Hammersmith and Fulham. Victims were fined £10 by Niewiadomski if they were late for a booking or a client walked out.
Officers found around £24,000 beside Niewiadomski’s bed and within a safe, as well as identity cards and 120 mobiles for bookings, at the Plumstead home which the pair shared with their child and Niewiadomski’s parents.
A Met Police spokesman said: “Officers from the MPS human trafficking unit began investigating the pair after several victims rang the unit’s 24-hour helpline. Detectives seized around £24,000 in cash found beside Niewiadomski’s bed and within a safe hidden in his wardrobe.
“They also recovered almost 50 identity cards for Polish men and women, suggesting that all these had been exploited or worked for the defendants. Police believe the actual number of victims is in excess of this.”
Niewiadomski was sentenced to three years and four months in prison, while Nosal was sentenced to 12 months.
Niewiadomski was charged with perverting the course of justice after he sent letters to victims, while he was in custody, inciting them to withdraw their claims.
