A gang member involved in one of a spate of hack attacks on Sony – which also included the notorious PlayStation Network breach – has been jailed for a year, followed by home detention and 1,000 hours of community service.
Cody Kretsinger, affiliated with the LulzSec hacking group, pleaded guilty in Los Angeles to breaching the Sony Pictures database and providing personal customer data to LulzSec. The group claimed to have accessed unencrypted personal information on over 1 million people.
Sony estimates damages caused by this hack alone to be around $600,000 (£392,000). Charges have also been brought against other members of the notorious group.
The attack was one of a series of assaults on Sony’s systems back in 2011, during which the PlayStation Network, Sony Online Entertainment, and Sony Pictures databases were infiltrated. The personal details of more than 100 million customers – including credit card information – were compromised, although Sony always denied the card details had been hacked.
In January this year, the Information Commissioner’s Office fined Sony £250,000 fine for the breach, but was immediately forced to defend the size of the fine which is half the amount it is permitted to issue.
