It seems that last week’s exposé about how OgilvyOne persuaded Campaign to drop the term “direct marketing” in favour of “customer engagement” has put the cat among the pigeons. According to my sources, I am definitely off their Christmas card list…shame.
Mind you, I’m in good company. Apparently Annette King actually ran away in fright from my esteemed editor at last year’s DMA Awards. Not that that’s unusual in itself – after all, everyone knows what he’s like when he’s had a few.
But of course Haymarket’s, er, advertising bible is no stranger to a bit of a King love-in. My old flame Jezza Lee was recently in full swing when commenting on her promotion to an EMEA role.
He rather embarrassingly gushed: “Having steered OgilvyOne to become one of the most successful customer engagement specialists in the UK, picking up three Campaign Agency of the Year accolades on the way (WTF??), such recognition and reward for this most competitive and driven leader was entirely appropriate.”
Dear, oh dear. Jezza then went on to suggest that this wider role had ultimately meant King was so stretched that she had taken her eye off the ball, triggering the loss of the lead role on WPP’s Team News account. Of course, some rather unkind people suggested it was something to do with Chris Whitson joining the team…surely not.
Mind you, it would seem that love is all around this week, with Tesco’s under-fire group marketing director – the lovely former Havas EHS chief Matt Atkinson – wooing Mumsnet.
Speaking at a conference organised by the social media Muffia this week, he turned on his undoubted charm, wooed them with his Iron Man physique and let his silvery tongue do the rest.
Now some people have claimed his boss Philip Clarke has been engaging in a rather nasty “whispering campaign” against our lovely Matt, strongly denied of course. But old Clarkey had better watch out now that Matt has got Mumsnet on his side.
He might think the City is giving him a rough ride, but any attempt to sideline our favourite former DM chief could be disasterous. If hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, upsetting the scary bitches of Mumsnet would no doubt unleash Beelzebub herself.
Haha, don’t you just love girlie power?
