A word of warning before you escape to ‘la dolca vita’

Ever thought of jacking it all in and moving abroad? Apparently you are not alone, with one recent report indicating that 23% of British adults are considering a move within the next five years, equating to approximately 12.3 million people.

Now while getting shot of a few racists wouldn’t go amiss, apparently, a significant driver for this is the desire for a better quality of life, with the cost of living and the weather also being major factors.

However, if you are looking for a smug twat who has managed to crack it already, look no further than British-Italian SEO consultant Luca Tagliaferro (the clue being the British-Italian bit) who has sold his home in Hampshire, resigned from full-time work, and relocated his family to Southern Italy.

Not only that, he is so desperate for fame that he has sent out a press release all about it, under the headline “Toxic Masculinity, Rising Bills, and £7 Pints: Why This Brit Says the UK Isn’t Worth It Anymore.”

Tagliaferro explained: “Mortgage rates doubled, private school fees climbed to £20,000 a year, and even my GP was Googling symptoms. We didn’t want to raise our son in a system where kids start drinking at 12 and toxic masculinity is normalised. Italy wasn’t perfect, but the positives outweighed the negatives.

“The UK cost-of-living crisis is pushing more families to leave. In Italy we’ve gained sunshine, social life, and time. My son’s international school is bilingual, the beach is five minutes away, and we’re surrounded by friends.”

Interestingly, while Luca laxes lyrical, others are quick to point out the many flaws of Italian life.

In fact, the Internations Expat Insider survey recently ranked Italy in the bottom 10 places to live, while others claim wages are pitiful and if you are under 30 you will likely earn less than €1,000 a month in the majority of cities.

In addition, everything is expensive, most people work more than they are legally required to otherwise they get fired, the infrastructure is crumbling, as is the pension system, politics is corrupt, and it has some of the highest taxes in Europe. Lucky Luca.

Even so, he predicts that more UK professionals will relocate abroad in the next five years, particularly to Italy. “It’s not about escaping, it’s about designing a better life. For us, it was the best decision we’ve ever made.” Good riddance.

Anyway, quite why Luca decided to send out a press release is anyone’s guess. After all, as an SEO consultant surely he could have just put all this nonsense online and let everyone find him (although by publishing this I am inadvertently helping him. Grrr).

Then again, he could probably do with typing the word BREXIT into Google and he might, just might discover that “British citizens’ EU citizenship and free movement rights ended when the Brexit transition period expired on 31 December 2020”, making it virtually impossible to move to Italy or anywhere else in the EU for that matter.

Just saying…
