The Warwick University Rowing Society’s plan to emulate the Calendar Girls of the Women’s Institute have fallen foul of Facebook censors, who have branded photos of the fundraising initiative “pornography”.
The calendar sported a series of images as the 17 members of the group posed naked in their boat-house and in action the River Avon, before posting the pictures on both Facebook and Twitter.
Funds from the calendar were due to be split between Macmillan Cancer Charity and the rowing club’s coffers, to help with its expansion.
But killjoy Facebook bosses – who allow beheadings to appear on the site – were less than impressed and blocked it, deeming the pictures to be “explicitly sexual content”.
The rowers were told they were breaching the social media sites’ “nudity and pornography” policy.
Organiser Sophie Bell, 20, a history and politics student, said: “Facebook can unpublish pages after it gives you a warning to make amendments. That happened to us a couple of times over the last year where they would ask us to remove certain pictures randomly because they breached their nudity and porn regulations.
“We always made the amendments and took the pictures down – even though they were no racier than the others – but a few days ago they emailed and said the page was being completely removed. To have this page unfairly taken away is going to affect our sales for the 2015 calendar and decrease the amount we can make for charity.
“There are loads of similar nude charity calendars who have Facebook pages plastered across the site – why aren’t they being asked to takes theirs down too.”
In an email sent to the group, Facebook told them their site had been removed for ‘violating’ its terms of use. It warned: “Continued misuse of Facebook’s features could result in the permanent loss of your account.”
