New hack as PSN relaunches site

The video games company behind Tomb Raider and Final Fantasy has become the latest victim of a data breach, with hackers understood to have purloined the email addresses of up to 25,000 customers registered for product updates from three Square Enix websites.
The move comes as Sony’s attempts to restart its PlayStation Network have been hit by high demand for new passwords, resulting in the service only being available intermittently.
Square Enix has confirmed hackers gained access to parts of its Eidosmontreal.com website and two product sites, and could also have walked off with details of 350 job applicants.
The company said in a statement that it does not hold any credit card data on its servers. Square Enix added that there is no evidence the job application information has been distributed, and that the email addresses are not linked to any additional personal information.
The company says it took the sites offline immediately to investigate how the intruders gained access and to increase security measures before allowing the sites to go live again.
Games site security has come under close scrutiny since the Sony breach, although, as this particular hack did not include financial details, it is likely to be viewed less seriously.
Still, like the customers at Play.com, TripAdvisor, M&S and Mothercare, registered users of Square Enix should be bracing themselves for a major surge in spam email.
