The days when people went to bed to either sleep or have ‘fun’ are officially over, after new research claimed almost half the UK’s workforce under the age of 35 check their emails while in the sack.
And the younger you are, the more likely it is that a mobile device will be “coming between you”, with 87% of 16- to 24-year-olds using a tablet in bed…and we are not talking Viagra.
Surveys dating as far back as 2009 have charted the rise of the so-called e-mattress. Back in 2010, 19% of Americans confessed to checking emails in the bedroom, while last year a survey by Good Technology (now VML) showed 37% of UK respondents admitted to routinely sending work email in bed.
Speaking at the Future Foundation’s Spring Conference, head of research Katie Toll, said: “Bedtime is not relaxation time anymore, it’s a time for connection via a multitude of devices.”
With technology breaking down the boundaries between work and home, one in four UK employees say they are working longer hours since the economic downturn, with 14% working weekends.
The Future Foundation study adds that 68% of 25- to 34-year-olds never switch off their mobile phones. And things are about to get much worse – by 2020, the average consumer will have access to 6.5 connected smart devices.
