All RBS, NatWest and Ulster Bank customers making online and card payments were affected between 18:30 and 21:30 yesterday, so-called Cyber Monday, although the group claims all systems were now back to normal.
An RBS spokesman said: “We are deeply sorry for the inconvenience. If anyone has been left out of pocket as a result of these systems problems, we will put this right.”
The bank told the BBC that it still did not know the cause of the glitch, but was working through “a detailed analysis”. “We’ve really caused problems. It is completely unacceptable that customers couldn’t access their own money,” it added.
This is the second time customers have been hit by an IT cock-up. Last year millions of RBS, NatWest and Ulster Bank customers were out of their accounts for several days.
It was later forced to admit Edinburgh staff were responsible for the systems failure, having initially blamed a worker in India. An upgrade made to batch processing software from CA Technologies was at the heart of the failure.
