Ground control to Major Tom; if you want to know how your friends and colleagues are going to vote in next week’s General Election, you need look no further than their music collection, according to a new study carried out by Facebook.
The social network, which analysed the 1.3 million users within the UK who have ‘liked’ one of the main political parties, reckons it can gauge most people’s political leanings.
Ziggy Stardust famously played guitar left hand, and Bowie fans also veer to the left, as do lovers of Blur, REM, Radiohead, Arctic Monkeys and The Beatles, which all featured strongly among Labour voters.
Top of the charts for the Conservatives was Cheryl Fernandez-Versini – a recent critic of the mansion tax – followed by The Vamps, 5 Seconds of Summer and rapper Iggy Azalea. However, it seems David Cameron is all alone in his alleged adoration of The Smiths; they feature nowhere on the “blue” list.
Meanwhile Lib Dems’ favourite artist was Lady Gaga; Green fans favoured Radiohead above all others; while those who like the SNP are also fans of Charlie and the Bhoys. Welsh folk act 9Bach is the band of choice for Plaid Cymru supporters.
In terms of likes, the Conservative party’s official Facebook page has the most, on 426,837, closely followed by Ukip’s 414,254. Labour has 260,821, the Green Party has 194,281 and the Liberal Democrats’ page has 110,517 likes. The SNP has 196,925 likes, while Plaid Cymru has 17,054.
