Dream Team Getaway slips into The Beautiful Country

Ciao, ciao a tutti i miei fan – vecchi e nuovi – e benvenuti al secondo appuntamento con le mie riflessioni sulla vacanza estiva del Dream Team.

Yep, you may well have guessed, we have now popped over the border to Il Bel Paese, the land of the Italian Stallion, as our tour of the Med continues to check out the top performers on Lovehoney’s latest LibidOlympics chart. As we have said before, it’s hard work but someone’s got to do it.

Now, apparently Italy leads the field when it comes to libido – well, so they claim – but to be honest it’s too damn hot over here to do anything but gawp at the men while admiring the local cheese. We are on holiday, after all.

Did you know that Italy produces more than 400 types of cheese? Each one has its own unique character, shaped by the milk, the region, and age-old production techniques. This incredible variety has made authentic Italian cheese a global favourite. In fact, in just the first half of this year, Italian dairy producers exported over 93,000 tons of the stuff, but luckily there is still some left.

So, while we eye up the local talent, we are quietly gobbling on…Gorgonzola, the blue cheese made from unskimmed cow’s milk, believed to have been created in the 9th century. (Yes, it’s nearly as old as my esteemed editor.)

Luckily, it is available in two dominant variations: dolce, with a more delicate flavour and buttery consistency, and piccante, with a more pungent flavour and firm texture. Just how I like my men…

We have also been munching down on Mozzarella di Bufala Campana. Made from 100% water buffalo milk, it is a fresh, soft pasta filata cheese, traditionally produced in Campania, particularly in the provinces of Caserta and Salerno and offers a rich, milky flavour with a silky, soft texture. Just how I like my men, too.

But, naturally, we couldn’t come to Italy without stuffing some Parmigiano-Reggiano. Known as the king of cheeses, this grainy cow’s milk cheese offers a deep, nutty flavour when aged for 24 to 36 months and it is lovely and hard. Just how I like my men, yet again.
