‘Tis the season to be jolly but not on the Costa del Booze

With Black Friday just a week away and only 34 hangovers – sorry, I mean sleeps – until Christmas Day itself, I am suddenly coming over all festive (lucky old all festive, you may say).

To be honest, I already have a couple of very large baubles dangling near my face, but that’s another story.

Yet what about all those Brits who can’t stand the tinsel and jingle bells of home – not to mention the biting cold wind – and escape to sunny Spain for the season?

Well, apparently they are in for a big shock, according to our new friends over at international law firm Giambrone & Partners (any port in a storm).

You see, apparently the vast majority (that’s 88% to be precise) of Brits are completely ignorant (harsh but fair). And it just so happens that the same proportion are unaware of new laws in Spain concerning drunk and disorderly behaviour introduced to curb the conduct of unruly tourists, while three-quarters (76%) of Brits also admitted that they do not check alcohol consumption laws before travelling to any country.

Even so, anyone caught drinking in the street in Spain could now be fined between €500 and €1,500, and party boats are no longer allowed within one nautical mile of the shoreline. It is also illegal to argue or swear at the police.

These new rules are in addition to Spanish legislation passed in 2020, which banned the consumption of alcohol on the streets, while shops can no longer sell alcohol after a certain time. With actions such as violent and threatening behaviour, and disorderly conduct already a crime in Spain, these new laws are aimed at whipping holidaymakers into shape once and for all. Good luck with that mis amiguis.

Now, naturally, you may be left wondering what the hell all this has got to do with Giambrone & Partners? Well, apparently – according to Giambrone & Partners – the new crackdown could lead to more calls to international law firms like, you guessed it, Giambrone & Partners. Well, no doubt that is what they are hoping.

Mind you, all this talk of getting lashed up is making me rather thirsty; well, ’tis the season to be jolly after all. Bottom’s up!
