Why the love rats are tightening up their purse strings

foxy 414Another year, another Black Friday. Ho hum. Sadly, while the BBC reports “Black Friday off to ‘steady start’ despite cost of living concerns”, here at the Decision Marketing Nerve Centre (aka McKelvey’s front room) I am so busy picking up all the bargains that I have forgotten to do any research for my weekly musings.

Luckily help is at hand – as ever – in yet another survey from everyone’s favourite cheaters’ website, illicitencounters.com, which has come to the conclusion that the cost of living crisis is forcing millions more Brits to engage in riskier behaviour to keep their affair secret, while saving cash.

That’s right, in what could be bad news for the travel industry – let alone the cheater’s fave online portal Dayuse.com – love rats are not only unwilling to go more than 5km to meet a potential new partner, they are eschewing hotel rooms, too.

Illicit Encounters “sexpert” Jessica Leoni reckons: “We’re seeing more and more lovers prepared to look closer to home to save on costs and the obvious implication of that is an increased risk of getting caught by someone you know.”

Perhaps worse is that 63% of cheaters say they are meeting their lovers in their own homes over booking a romantic night in a hotel to save money – and both parties are up for it, in more ways than one.

Leoni added: “The research paints a picture of lovers adapting to the current economic crisis and proves an affair doesn’t have to be like the sort you see on TV to be fulfilling. In fact, the heightened risk levels of an affair playing out in the public eye is clearly a thrill for some.”

But how can the marketing industry benefit, I hear you ask?

To be fair, I haven’t got a clue – I only write about this stuff. Suffice to say though, if cheaters are too mean to splash the cash they will be spending more and more time at home, so they could well be more receptive to door-drops and direct mail.

Just don’t forget, high-ticket items are off the menu – it seems today’s cheaters really do love a tight arse…
