“Less than half?” Well, apparently, NEARLY HALF (45%) ARE PERFECTLY HAPPY with their home/office split – not much of a story then.
Still, maybe there are other forces at work, as, according to the Global Payroll Alliance, half of office workers would be more productive if frustrating office maintenance issues, such as broken heating and dilapidated breakout areas, were more promptly resolved.
In fact, when common office maintenance issues aren’t promptly or properly resolved, it has a significant negative impact on their productivity, happiness and will to be present in the workplace.
Digging deeper, 35% of people say lazy office maintenance negatively impacts their working life, while half (49%) believe it actually makes them less productive.
More than half (52%) say that they would be happier at work if issues were properly addressed, and one in five (21%) say that they actively avoid spending time in the workplace as a result of ongoing office maintenance issues.
The most frequently reported issues revolve around temperature and climate control. Many workers said they are frustrated by heating or air conditioning systems that are constantly on and set to uncomfortable levels.
In fact, 18% of respondents have experienced this issue regularly. Additionally, 16% say faulty air conditioning makes hot days unbearable, and 15% note that central heating problems make winter workdays uncomfortable.
Other common complaints include poorly maintained breakout and wellbeing spaces (13%), deteriorating toilet facilities (10%), and non-functioning lifts (9%), all of which contribute to a general sense of neglect in the workplace.
When asked which issue is most frustrating overall, the most common answer by a significant margin was the constant operation of heating or cooling systems at the wrong temperature, cited by 37% of people.
So if maintenance issues are so damaging to workplace productivity and morale, why are problems not being properly resolved?
Nearly a third (30%) of office workers think it’s because their company doesn’t have the necessary budget to remediate issues, 22% believe it’s due to a lack of care from management, and 21% lay the blame squarely at the door of substandard office management.
All of which makes me rather happy I don’t have to work in a proper office with all these moaning minnies. Suddenly, the front room at the old soak’s (that’s the esteemed editor of this august online empire to you lot) doesn’t seem so bad, after all.
Roll on Monday!
