Double-digit boost for creative jobs

Double-digit boost for creative jobsThe creative industries have witnessed a double-digit surge in jobs over the past two years as companies operating in advertising, marketing, IT and support roles staff up for growth.
The figures, released by the Department for Culture Media & Sport, show that jobs in the creative industries have increased by more than 10% from 2011 to 2013 – from 1.5 million to 1.7 million.
The 2013 figures represent a 5.6% share of the UK’s total jobs, an increase from 5.2% in 2011. Job growth across all industries in the UK from 2011 to 2013 was just 2.4%.
The report also identified regions in the UK that were providing a higher than average proportion of jobs in a particular sector in 2013.
However, it was not all good news; the creative industries employed a lower proportion of women than the wider UK economy in 2013, with 37% of jobs filled by women compared to nearly 47% in the UK as a whole.
Meanwhile only 10.6 % of workers were from black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds in 2013, although this is a slight increase from 10% in 2011.
Pauline Tambling, joint chief executive of Creative and Cultural Skills, the sector’s leading body for skills development, said she was “delighted” to see the DCMS report reinforce the creative industries’ status as a “powerhouse” of the UK’s economy.
However, she warned that more needed to be done to improve education and training in the sector to address “entrenched” issues such as unpaid internships and a lack of diversity.
She said: “This means opening up creative careers through fairly paid and fairly accessible opportunities for all. For example, whilst it’s encouraging to see that some regions are performing particularly strongly, the DCMS statistics show that London and the south east still represent over 42% of all activity, so there’s work to be done to address the balance of opportunities across the UK.”
