eBay meltdown ‘the first of many’

eBay meltdown 'the first of many'Online companies are being told to brace themselves for regular Internet breakdowns following this week’s outage which saw thousands of eBay customers demand compensation after the site went down for most of Tuesday.
The problem is understood to have been caused by the technology which drives the Internet, called the Border Gateway Protocol. These routers remember how to navigate consumers through the ever-expanding Internet.
But older routers are groaning under the weight of new technology – such as smartphones and tablets – which has significantly increased the number of people online and the time spent on the web.
In order to deal with the increase in web traffic, routers need to be updated with more memory and processing power, experts say.
Weekly Internet retail sales averaged £729m in June, meaning more of these problems could see online retailers losing millions of pounds of trade in the future.
Richard Perks, from the market analysts Mintel, said: “Online firms build up their reputations on trust, on delivering a flawless experience to their customers. If such problems become a regular feature, then that is a serious problem both for firms and for the economy in general.”
Tuesday’s collapse at eBay – the tenth this year – followed a major data breach in May, in which a database of eBay customers’ names, encrypted passwords, email addresses, home addresses, dates of birth and phone numbers.
