The England team will be on the first plane home from Brazil, after failing to even qualify from the group stages, according to a predictive analysis of World Cup fixtures carried out by data company MetaMetrics.
In what will make rather grim reading for Roy Hodgson’s men – even before they have kicked a ball in anger – the prediction comes from a bespoke Bayesian Modelling Platform (BayesIQ) that MetaMetrics has built for business purposes.
It claims the system is the first of its kind, able to blend multiple internal and external data sources with management hypotheses in order to create results supported by the data and “reflect reality”.
According to the stats, England will draw the first game against Italy, lose the second against Uruguay but muster a win against the group whipping boys Costa Rica.
Meanwhile, the final will be played out by Brazil and Argentina, with the home side eventually picking up the World Cup trophy. Current holders Spain will get stuffed in the semi-finals.
And, just in case you thought Paul the Octopus was more reliable at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, the MetaMetrics system successfully predicted last night’s result, with Brazil winning by two goals.
MetaMetrics’ Sam Watts said: “We like Bayesian methods because this is in fact how we all make decisions. We process information in the context of our experience, judgement and other knowledge on a daily basis. Even if some of those data sources are less robust, we can still get value from them by blending them into the mix. More forward looking companies are able to leverage this data whilst preventing poor decision making by not over relying on it.”
