The Institute of Promotional Marketing has finally appointed a successor to Annie Swift, although the new boss – Jodie Hopperton – takes the lesser role of managing director rather than chief executive.
Swift, the former Centaur Media publishing director for Marketing Week, and the now-defunct New Media Age, Precision Marketing and Instore Marketing, quit the trade body in July 2013, after five years in the role.
As the organisation’s first ever chief executive, she implemented the name change from the Institute of Sales Promotion in March 2010 as well as a number of operational measures. Swift recently headed up the Retail Expo 2014, although it is not known whether she will continue in the role for the 2015 event.
Hopperton takes up the majority of Swift’s responsibilities, but the IPM has outsourced support for the bulk of its finances. Like Swift, Hopperton’s experience lies in publishing, having worked at Trinity Mirror, The World Association of Newspapers, the New York Times and the Global Editors Network. She has been working as a consultant for the past year.
Commenting on the appointment, IPM chairman Becky Munday said: “Jodie brings a wealth of knowledge of the marketing and media world with her. In particular, her understanding of the latest new technologies and her experience in driving the exploitation of digital media in the publishing world will be invaluable in positioning the IPM to drive innovation and growth in the promotional marketing industry.”
The IPM recently hired its first in-house full-time lawyer supported by an existing partnership with Lewis Silkin. It has also appointed a full-time membership manager to spearhead a new recruitment drive.
