PayPal is aiming to fight off increased competition in the online payment market by appointing its first dedicated CRM agency in the UK.
The pitch, which is reportedly being handled by Creativebrief, is at the early stages, with chemistry meetings yet to be scheduled. The firm has previously used agencies on a project basis.
Havas Worldwide handles PayPal’s global advertising business.
The online payment market is becoming increasingly competitive with the advent of mobile schemes.
Weve, the joint mobile advertising venture between EE, O2 and Vodafone headed up by former agency chief Tim Hipperson, has recently said it will be expanding into the sector.
Meanwhile, the Payment Council recently launched its own service – Paym – which enables customers to pay for goods from existing mobile banking or payment apps. At launch, customers of nine bank and building society brands – Bank of Scotland, Barclays, Cumberland Building Society, Danske Bank, Halifax, HSBC, Lloyds Bank, Santander and TSB – will be able to use Paym to send and receive payments using just a mobile number.
Zapp, backed by VocaLink, the technology company behind the UK’s payment infrastructure, is also due to launch. It has also signed up HSBC, First Direct, Nationwide, Santander and Metro Bank. Former Capital One marketing chief Justin Basini heads up the firm’s marketing operation.
Even Apple is making a major play for a slice of the action through its Apple Pay programme, unveiled earlier this year.
