Rapp group communications director Robert Mayes – the founding editor of Precision Marketing – is understood to have left the agency after over 14 years to pursue “new opportunities”.
Mayes started his career as a journalist on the launch team of Media Week. Then, in 1989, he joined Centaur Media as launch editor of Precision Marketing, before switching to head of magazine development and then features editor of Money Marketing.
He joined Rapp – then WWAV – in August 1997 when co-founder John Watson was still heading up the business.
Over the past 14 years he has been involved in PR and marketing, as well as political lobbying activity for the group, rubbing shoulders with politicians, government departments and relevant trade associations.
A well-connected industry figure, Mayes was ranked in the top ten industry networkers by Haymarket’s Marketing Direct magazine. Mayes was unavailable for comment although it is understood he has left without a job to go to.
Centaur Media closed down Precision Marketing in January 2009, claiming that a magazine dedicated solely to the £205bn direct marketing industry was no longer viable. The company said it had folded the title into its mainstream magazine Marketing Week. Haymarket closed Marketing Direct a few months later.
