Sky boost as budget tops £320m

Sky’s massive investment in marketing appears to be paying off after the company revealed it has added an extra 800,000 paid-for subscription packages – as well as 71,000 new customers – over the past three months.
The broadcaster, which revealed the figures in its results published today (Thursday), has also ploughed an extra £55m into its marketing budget, which now totals £320m, compared with £265m last year.
A record 642,000 customers connected their Sky+HD boxes to broadband in the quarter. As a result, the number of connected homes reached 3.4 million, up from 1.3 million last year, with Sky claiming to be the UK’s fastest-growing connected TV service.
Home communications performed particularly well with 111,000 new broadband customers, 151,000 telephony customers and 161,000 line rental customers. In all, 36% of its customer base now take all three of TV, broadband and telephony from Sky, 519,000 more than last year.
We closed the quarter with 11.2 million retail customers, growth of 71,000 in the quarter, almost 50% higher year on year.
“The rise has come from across the board,” said the BSkyB chief executive, Jeremy Darroch.
In terms of the financials, for the three months to September 30, revenues rose 7% from a year earlier to £1.84bn, although adjusted operating profits fell 8% to £285m.
