Teachers’ union caned by watchdog

Teachers' union caned by watchdogThe National Association of Schoolmasters Union of Women Teachers (NASUWT) has been given a whack on the backside by the ad watchdog after claiming it was the “largest teachers’ union in the UK” in a recruitment ad.
The national press ad for a job vacancy riled one reader who challenged whether it was misleading because they understood the National Union of Teachers (NUT) had a larger membership than the NASUWT.
In response to an inquiry by the Advertising Standards Authority, bosses at the NASUWT were defiant, claiming it was an accurate description. They maintained that, unlike its own organisation, the NUT does not operate in Scotland and Northern Ireland and therefore did not cover half of the UK.
The NASUWT added that the reference to “teachers'” in the ad would be understood by consumers as a reference to “practising” teachers, which meant it was the largest union.
However, it clearly had not done its homework as the union failed to provide sufficient written evidence to support its claim.
Banning the ad, the ASA sad: “Submitted evidence did not demonstrate an accurate comparison of practising teachers in each union, because evidence was not submitted to demonstrate that the NASUWT had more members than the NUT, we considered that this claim had not been substantiated and concluded that the ad was misleading.”
