Tesco unveils Google Glass app

Tesco unveils Google Glass appTesco may be going back to basics by flogging Blinkbox and DunnHumby but its technology hub is still going strong, after the firm became the first major British retailer to launch an app for Google Glass.
The app, known as Tesco Grocery, has been developed by Tesco Labs and allows shoppers to browse goods, view nutritional information and automatically add products to their online basket.
Glass wearers can add items to their basket either by doing a voice search for a product and selecting from a list of available items using the button on the side of the headset, or by scanning a product’s barcode using the in-built camera.
Tesco Labs innovation engineer Pablo Coberly said: “We want to ensure we have the means in place to allow customers to shop whenever, however they want which is why we’re testing the possibilities of customers topping up their online basket with Glass.”
Google Glass users can also view the nutritional information and price of food items, and compare them with other brands. Users can then review their basket and complete their order on a computer, tablet or mobile.
“We don’t envisage Glass becoming the new platform for shopping as its functionality is different, and more immediate. Instead, it compliments other devices and integrates shopping into everyday life because products can be ordered or added as and when customers realise they need replacing,” said Coberly.
“We’ve intentionally kept functionality very basic given the early stages of customer use of Glass. We’re keen to see how customers react to shopping with Glassware and welcome feedback or suggestions from customers using Glass.”
Google Glass – which cost £1,000 a pair – went on sale in the UK in June.
