However, leading UK psychologist and life coach Sophie Mort says being a creature of habit could be leaving you feeling flat and unfulfilled.
You see, our Soph is backing a new study that reveals a host of signs you could be stuck, with sitting in the same place on the sofa every night (46%), having your tea in the same mug every day (33%), sitting at the same place at the dinner table (29%) and ordering the same dishes at the same restaurants (27%) among the top signs.
While eating the same lunch almost every day (19%), taking the same route to work every day (22%), and even having a favourite ring on the cooker (21%) are other signs, according to the study of 2,000 Brits. In fact, a whopping 95% say they are a creature of habit, with 39% believing life is simpler if you do the same things all the time; 36% think ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ (36%); while a third (31%) consider a regular routine a typically British way to behave.
Sophie comments on the psychology of habit: “For many of us, repetition feels good. There is quiet comfort in familiarity, offering reassurance, belonging and a sense of stability. The brain also favours habits because they conserve energy; behaviours become automatic, requiring very little conscious thought. This leads us to habitually reach for the same mug or settle into the same seat.
“However, the difficulty begins when routine is no longer chosen, but unconscious. When our days run entirely on autopilot, without variation, the brain receives less stimulation, days blur, and mood can begin to flatten.
“Over time, that’s when people start to feel quietly stuck, not because life is wrong, but because it has become too predictable.”
Luckily, almost 9 in 10 are itching to embrace more spontaneity in their lives. So, what you may ask, is the secret to a new fulfilled life, chock-a-block with excitement?
Well, apparently, according to the report, it is the new Dr Pepper’s limited edition Cream Swirl flavour, which promised a “one-of-a-kind flavour with an indulgent, creamy twist”. Desperate? Surely not…
To be fair, I think I would rather sit in the same place on the sofa every night, have my tea in the same mug every day, sit at the same place at the dinner table and order the same dishes at the same restaurants than drink that gloop. Just saying.
Foxy has ditched X but is still on Instagram, just don’t get too excited as she’s never there
