Angels ‘pleasure’ ad gets ASA ban

2 AngelsA racy TV ad for the Angels lap dancing club promoting “an array of stunning and devilish angels for your pleasure and indulgence” has fallen foul of the regulator after being broadcast before the 9pm watershed – mistakenly according to the company.
The ad, running on Punjabi music channel Brit Asia, showed two women dressed as showgirls leading the viewer into the club, where a woman was standing in the doorway. The voiceover stated: “Inspired by all four corners of the world, Angels Club in Birmingham and Leicester denotes style and sophistication with.”
It showed scenes of the club, of women dancing on a stage, and of roulette and blackjack tables. The voiceover continued “Now open seven days a week from 8pm until very late. Angels is simply the number one club for you.”
One complainant challenged whether the ad was offensive and inappropriate for broadcast on at 8.57pm when it might be seen by children.
In its defence, the company said the ad was supposed to have been broadcast five times a night between 9pm and midnight, for a month. However, after one week, Brit Asia had said the ad would only be broadcast between 11pm and 1am.
Although the Advertising Standards Authority acknowledged the ad did not include any explicit nudity, it deemed the content – including racy shots of dancers, as well as roulette wheels and blackjack tables – was inappropriate for broadcast in or around programmes which were likely to appeal to audiences below the age of 18.
Banning the commercial, the ASA ruled it ad must never be broadcast again around programmes which were likely to appeal to a younger age group.
