Digital marketers get career leg-up

UK digital marketers are being offered top-level career advice and valuable insights from some of the country’s leading digital marketers – from brands as diverse as Selfridges and LV to Bupa and Virgin – in a new free guide produced by econsultancy.
The guide, written by digital consultant and author James Gurd, contains comprehensive advice about professional development from a raft of senior digital marketing and e-commerce professionals.
The 45-page report also features a recruiter and executive search directory, providing information on 14 companies that can assist digital professionals with their careers, and a salary survey so that senior professionals can see what they are worth.
The publication is believed to be the first such comprehensive guide in the sector. Gurd said: “In a fast-paced industry, it’s not so much ‘job for life’ as ‘industry for life’, so the challenge is on planning an ascent path that can keep you challenged and motivated.”
He added: “One of the biggest hurdles is knowing how to map your progression and ensure you are constantly learning, whilst getting the financial rewards relevant to your experience and skills. There is no right way to manage your career but there are recommended techniques that will help you considerably. This is where the careers guide comes in handy; it gives you practical advice when considering the next step in digital marketing and e-commerce.”
Sections of the guide include:
 The key challenges for digital leaders, including the different points to consider for career advancement.
 A discussion of digital leader roles, including examples from both the client and agency side and advice on working in either a freelance or consultancy role.
 The skills required to be a leader, including practical examples of when these skills were used well and not so well.
 Advice on improving skills and experience.
