Iceland takes swipe at Boris Johnson as PM set to quit

boris icelandFrozen food giant Iceland has split opinion with a swipe at Boris Johnson over the political crisis which has engulfed Downing Street over the past 48 hours.

The company – whose managing director Richard Walker is a Brexit backing Conservative Party donor – tweeted: “Having trouble keeping your cabinet full? Shop everyday essentials from Iceland.co.uk”.

So far this week, 60 Conservative MPs have resigned from Government roles, including Chancellor Rishi Sunak, Health Secretary Sajid Javid, Education Secretary Michelle Donelan, Welsh Secretary Simon Hart and Northern Ireland Secretary Brandon Lewis.

Johnson is expected to finally announce he is stepping down from the Prime Minister role later today.

Many on Twitter found the post highly amusing; one said: “This is one of the best ads I’ve ever seen,” another added: “My opinion of your store has gone up a millionfold and as far as your chairman is concerned, he can stick it where the lollies don’t freeze”, while a third said: “Even for you, that’s cold.”

Others were not quite so amused, one critic said: “Your CEO is a Johnson cheerleader: and also backed #Brexit, which was Johnson’s route to power and which has left the country poorer, weaker, less secure, less influential and more isolated – both worldwide and in its own backyard of Europe.”

A second said: “During a cost of living crisis – which is likely impacting many of your customers – this seems in bad taste. Timing is everything.” A third wrote: “Cynical marketing, given your boss was so keen on Leave.”
