Organisers of the Webit Congress, a global event for digital, tech and telco firms, have been left red-faced after an email marketing cock-up saw them urge delegates to sign up for the event and sample the “whores of Instanbul”.
The email campaign went out to thousands of prospective and previous visitors to the conference and exhibition, claimed to be “the only global event bringing together digital, tech and telco Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asia”.
It read: “Webit Congress (http://www.webitcongress.com/) is growing bigger than ever…Join the 8000+ attendees from 100+ countries + 200 top-world-class speakers & welcome to our new home on the whores of Marmara Sea in Istanbul, Turkey.”
But having quickly realised the gaffe, the organisers despatched an apologetic email, which said it should have said “the shores of Mamara Sea in Instanbul”.
It continued: “Please accept our deepest apologies for the absolutely unintended and ridiculous typo we did in the email we have sent you earlier today.”
The 5th annual Webit Congress takes place on November 6-7 2013, with sponsors and delegates from some of the biggest firms in the world – including Adobe, Paypal, Facebook, IBM, P&G, Google and Intel – signed up. Whether visitor numbers will soar following the email cock-up is not known.
