‘Wild’ scent creates stink at ASA

'Wild' scent creates stink at ASAAn ad for a male “wonder perfume” – which was claimed to drive women wild as well as give men the edge in business – has been banned by the ad watchdog after the firm behind the brand was unable to substantiate its claims.
The product, called Ruthvahon, was promoted online at sorcerers-apprentice .co.uk. The text stated: “This legendary and infamous perfume for men is only for the discerning. Apart from its obvious advantages with the opposite, Ruthvah is said to also give you an edge in business and commerce.
“Whether synthetic pheromone is better than the natural stuff we cannot say but we are the only firm able to offer Genuine SA Ruthvah fragrance which many thousands of discerning users have tried and tested over 35 years.
“For deeply sexual overtones put a little under each arm or on the loins so the effect is subtle but rapid. It is said to drive women wild yet often they will not understand themselves exactly why.”
But one complainant challenged many of the product’s claims, sparking an investigation by the Advertising Standards Authority.
However, while Sorcerers Apprentice provided comments to the ASA, it insisted it did not have time to gather the appropriate evidence before the deadline.
And this lack of robust evidence, ultimately condemned the ad. Ruling the claims must not appear again in their current form, the ASA told Sorcerers Apprentice not to make efficacy claims or to claim that large numbers of people had tried their products unless they held documentary evidence to that effect.
