Etsy celebrates ‘ministones’ to flag up all things human

Online marketplace Etsy is aiming to highlight how, as more of life becomes automated and algorithmically flattened, people are craving things that feel personal, expressive, and real through a new brand campaign running across the UK and US.

At the centre of “Celebrate Being Human” is a 60-second spot that counts out a human life through the moments that shape it, both big and small: 76 summers, 6 best friends, 4 best dog friends, 1,205 firsts. Across those moments, Etsy appears not as the centre of the story but woven into it.

Directed by London-born filmmaker Jess Kohl and shot by Academy Award-nominated cinematographer Adolpho Veloso, the film uses natural light and an almost entirely real cast of couples and families.

It captures what Etsy calls “ministones”, the non-traditional milestones (fresh starts, celebrations, heartbreak or moving) that matter just as much. The film also features a bespoke soundtrack by Moses Sumney.

The campaign marks an evolution in Etsy’s brand storytelling. For the past two years, Etsy’s marketing has focused heavily on the sellers behind the marketplace and the human ecosystem they have built. “Celebrate Being Human” expands that frame to include the buyers too: the people turning to Etsy to mark the moments in life that feel deeply personal and worth remembering.

The work also reflects a broader cultural shift in how people celebrate. Younger consumers increasingly define meaningful moments on their own terms, extending beyond traditional milestones like weddings and birthdays to include things like healing after heartbreak, moving into a first apartment, finding yourself again, or creating new traditions.

Etsy’s perspective is that these moments deserve just as much care, intentionality, and humanity as the conventional ones.

Etsy chief marketing officer Brad Minor said: “As so much of life has become automated and impersonal, people are hungry for things that feel real, personal, and intentional.

“We see it in the way younger generations are rewriting which moments are worth celebrating, expanding beyond traditional milestones to include the smaller, imperfectly human ones that matter just as much, sometimes even more.

“‘Celebrate Being Human’ is our response to that shift. It’s our conviction that story, craft and human connection carry more value than convenience alone. Those have always been the values that Etsy stands for, and there’s never been a better time in the culture to say it out loud.”

Orchard executive creative director Heather Larimer added: “Etsy’s scale and buyer experience make it maybe the most human brand on earth, which is why ‘Celebrate Being Human’ started with thinking about the utter preciousness of our lives.

“We focused on the adventure of a single human lifespan: how few summers we actually get, how many great loves we’ll experience, how many pets we’ll have. These milestones are important to celebrate, and Etsy has a role to play in elevating them. And while it’s never been easier to choose something mass produced and cheap, it’s never been more important to choose something human made, original, and specific to the person buying it.”
