Data platform set up by ex-Just Eat chiefs plots growth

kleeneAn automated data collection and analytics platform, launched by two former JustEat chiefs in 2017, has raised £1.1m to fund further growth to boost its headcount and expand its services.

Kleene.ai is the brainchild of chief executive Andrew Thomas and chief data officer Matt Sawyer, who met at Just East when they were head of data science and head of business information, respectively.

Thomas, who started his career as a market analyst also had a spell as data director at Notonthehighstreet.com. Meanwhile Sawyer worked at Experian, Unilever, and Ladders before becoming group head of data at Momondo and chief data officer at Trainline.com.

Episode 1, Superseed and angel investors have backed the platform, which offers a “one stop platform for data collection, cleansing, organisation and centralisation”, enabling firms to unlock the analytics value in their data without hiring data engineers.

The company, which currently has about 20 full-time staff, is working with Moonpig, as well as scale-ups including fresh produce app The Modern Milkman, and Blue Light Card, a discount service for emergency services, health and armed forces personnel.

Designed to help companies slash the major time and financial costs when making their data ready for analysis, the co-founders insist Kleene.ai can improve a company’s speed to insight tenfold and save at least £80,000 a year on data engineering hires.

Thomas said: “Most companies now realise that they can’t continue to compete without underpinning decision making with data but when looking to leverage a cloud data warehouse the choice they face is either outsource the processing of data to expensive agencies or hire data engineering and build this internally.

“With our platform, businesses can put the power of data engineering in the hands of their analysts and achieve a massive acceleration in value in a much shorter time while retaining the valuable knowledge about their own business logic in-house.”

Episode 1 partner Simon Murdoch added: “Kleene is a brilliant solution allowing analysts to build and maintain their own data warehouse from their company’s many sources of data.

“Analysts can then focus their time on finding insights to transform the fortunes of their companies. Kleene is a great investment not just for our fund but for all our portfolio companies.”
