Door-drop blitz to woo Scots voters

Door-drop blitz to woo Scots votersThe humble door-drop could play a pivotal role in the rival campaigns for next week’s referendum on Scottish independence, with both the yes and no camps planning last-minute activity in a bid to sway voters.
With both parties neck and neck in the polls, the nationalists are planning to distribute 4.9 million leaflets, supported by 334 poster sites, while Better Together, for the no campaign, has booked 200 advertising sites and is sending 4 million leaflets to voters this week.
Both parties’ advertising has already been widely criticised for being too similar. Writing in the Huffington Post, Grey London chief executive Chris Hirst said: “Their advertising all looks the same and says the same thing. Women, babies and messages of love for Scotland abound. It’s clearly going for an emotional response, but it’s bland. You could swap their logos and it wouldn’t make much of a difference.”
Predictions of a bombardment of text messages have proven unfounded, however. It is understood that both parties have been far more cautious about using text messaging to woo the electorate after Better Together ran into trouble with the Information Commissioner’s Office last November.
Door-drop blitz to woo Scots voters 2The group was forced to sign an undertaking after sending 300,000 texts to individuals without adequately checking whether they had consented to being contacted.
At the time, ICO assistant commissioner for Scotland and Northern Ireland Ken Macdonald, said: “Engaging voters is vital for a healthy democracy, but campaigners must abide by the law.
“Over the next six months, the political parties and campaign groups involved in the referendum debate will come under intense scrutiny from the media and the public, so it is in their interests to get this right. Failure to do so will leave an organisation facing potential enforcement action by our office and reputational damage to their cause.”
