Merlin instils a sense of FOMO for London Eye activity

Merlin Entertainments is aiming to shift the way people see the London Eye in a new campaign that taps into a sense of FOMO, asking tourists and Londoners alike whether they have really experienced the capital if they have only seen the attraction from the ground.

The campaign, devised by TBWA\MCR, reframes the London Eye as more than a landmark by capturing the feeling of stepping into one of its pods and watching the city unfold in every direction, with every turn revealing something new.

The creative takes a deliberately stripped-back approach, removing the familiar wheel and leaving a single pod floating above the skyline. By isolating the pod, the work shifts attention away from the structure people know so well and onto the immersive experience waiting inside.

With the call to “Book Breathtaking Today”, the activity encourages visitors to reconsider their London itinerary. Rather than leaving with another photograph of the London Eye, it asks what they might miss by not stepping aboard and seeing the capital from a moving, 360-degree perspective.

The activity will run across digital out of home and BVOD as well as traditional out of home, YouTube, Meta and digital display, with media handled by OMD. Production was led by Chief, directed by Yoni Weisberg, with audio post-production from Rascal and post-production by Rascal and Chief.

Merlin Entertainments senior vice-president of global marketing Toby Horry said: “The London Eye is one of the most recognisable attractions in the world, but its ubiquity can sometimes mean people admire it without considering what it actually offers.

“This campaign challenges that by putting the experience at the centre of the story. It captures the feeling of stepping into a pod and seeing London unfold around you in a way that feels both immersive and unforgettable. We wanted to remind visitors that some of the city’s most breathtaking views aren’t of the London Eye, they’re from it.”

TBWA\MCR deputy creative director Becci Nadin added: “Every piece of work we do for Merlin encapsulates the thrill of the experience. So, to do that for London Eye in a completely unique way is an exciting new direction for us.

“We’re aware London Eye is one of the most recognisable landmarks in the world. But the task here was to take people from looking at it, to looking at the view from it. We needed an idea and execution that matched the iconic nature of this great British attraction. It’s simple, breathtaking and memorable, and we’re super proud of the outcome.”
