Mike Cavers, seen by many as the creative godfather of the UK direct marketing industry, has quit DST Applied Analytics after three years to take up the executive creative director role at WDMP.
Cavers, who has more than 35 years’ experience, was recruited by US-owned DST – then the Lateral Group – in March 2012 to give the business creative clout and supplement its data-centric services. The business also recruited former COI chief Marc Michaels.
Cavers set about building a creative department and worked on a raft of new account wins for the business – including Kwik-Fit, Wyevale Garden Centres, and Hyundai – but is understood to have wanted a new challenge for some time. The architect of DST’s agency approach, Jason Cromack, left the business last year.
At WDMP, set up in 2002 by Gavin and Craig Wheeler, Cavers succeeds creative director Gary Brooks and will lead the creative department, sitting within the management team. The agency’s clients include Tesco Bank, Cosmos Holidays, F&C Investments, Monarch Airlines, and Wyevale Garden Centres.
Brooks had joined WDMP from Ogilvy Active in July 2013 to effectively replace Gary Sharpen. Brooks officially left earlier this month.
Cavers came to prominence in the mid-Eighties as a founding partner and ECD of Limbo, Bartle Bogle Hegarty’s direct marketing arm. It was while at Limbo, he hired many of today’s top creatives and gave AIS co-founder Steve Stretton his first job in DM.
Cavers remained at Limbo for nearly a decade, then had spells at Payne Stracey, TBWA/H Europe Amsterdam, and Publicis Dialog, where he stayed for six years.
He quit Publicis in 2006 for Chemistry Communications but was then reunited with his former Publicis managing director Simon Marshall at The Marketing Store in 2009. Cavers stayed nearly three years before joining DST.
