Alzheimer’s Research shifts upbeat to speed up funding

Alzheimer’s Research UK is aiming to shift the narrative around the neurodegenerative disease from helplessness to urgent, tangible optimism in a major new campaign designed to transform passive sympathy into active support.

The campaign builds on the “For a Cure” activity, developed by Beyond, which originally launched in September 2023. Since then, the charity has seen a 32% increase in income, while climbing from 14th to 8th place among UK charities for “belief in cause”, according to YouGov research.

Dementia is the UK’s largest killer and it impacts one in two people, either by developing dementia, caring for someone with it, or both. However, thanks to scientific endeavours, a cure is now in sight and no longer a distant dream.

The new campaign calls out, “Somewhere, someone alive today could be the first one cured of Alzheimer’s”, in a upbeat message to fund a cure that will fundamentally change the future.

Moving away from the traditional emotional and melancholy ads of the charity sector, Beyond has developed a new approach to strategy, creative and media planning, mobilising the charity’s hard-earned donations to realise the biggest impact possible and to replace public helplessness with urgent optimism in line with the charity’s mission.

At the centre of the campaign is a cinematic film which taps into the visual concept of crowds, representing the immense scale and universal human relevance of Alzheimer’s.

In a single continuous, seamless camera movement through a bustling British park, director Saman Aminzadeh, alongside Oscar-nominated director of photography Robbie Ryan capture people of all ages to highlight how dementia touches every generation.

This approach is designed to instil a poignant sense of impatience, prompting viewers to wonder: which of these ages will be the first to be saved if we accelerate research today? The film is further elevated by a voiceover from BAFTA-winner Aimee Lou Wood and soundtracked by The Cure; the perfect choice for the mission of Alzheimer’s Research UK.

The campaign breaks this week, marking the start of a coordinated multi-channel media push ahead of World Alzheimer’s Day on September 21 2026.

With media planned and bought by Beyond, the campaign will run nationwide across TV, connected TV, radio, social, and cinema, backed by a number of media partnerships.

These include mirrored out-of-home takeovers that visually reflect the passersby into the ads themselves, reimagining Pearl & Dean’s cinema idents, teaming up with The Rest Is History podcast to link modern Alzheimer’s research to historic scientific breakthroughs, and leveraging corporate partners such as Dobbies Garden Centres, Roadchef and The Perfume Shop, to reach audiences across every aspect of daily life.

Alzheimer’s Research UK director of strategic marketing Carolyne Coupel said: “The charity is on a mission to accelerate progress towards a cure and this new campaign perfectly captures the urgency and hope of this moment.

“Shifting our focus away from helplessness toward radical optimism allows us to rally the public and speed up funding for a cure. Partnering with Beyond across creative and media as one team gave us the exact momentum and scale we need to reach our ambitious fundraising goals.”

Beyond co-founder and partner Jonny Ray added: “This campaign shows what’s possible when creativity and media unite around a truly powerful and strategic concept.

“This has been an incredible team effort with our clients and brilliant production and media partners. Working as one has allowed us to create a powerful story and system that will resonate deeply and maximise the impact for Alzheimer’s Research UK.”
