Matalan chief customer and omnichannel officer Ali Jones has joined the senior exodus at the cut-price designer chain, which has also seen the departure of CEO Jo Whitfield and chief trading officer Ben Smith.
Jones joined in April 2023 from Co-op Group, where she was customer and community director from 2018 to 2022.
Whitfield who had been Co-op Food chief executive joined a month earlier; her role is currently being overseen by Matalan chair, Karl-Heinz Holland, who has taken on the role of executive chair until a successor is appointed.
In November 2023, Matalan appointed former Marks & Spencer chief digital and technology officer Jeremy Pee to a board advisory role, which he continues to hold.
During her tenure, Jones was responsible for leading the retailer’s marketing, ecommerce and international teams, establishing the new unit to connect all customer touchpoints and provide further clarity and accountability for its customers.
All marketing, ecommerce and international teams reported into the customer and omnichannel function.
Prior to the Co-op, Jones held senior brand and marketing roles at Woolworths Australia, Debenhams, M&S, Next and Arcadia Group.
A Matalan spokesperson said: “We thank Ali for her contribution to Matalan and wish her all the best for the future.”
The retailer has worked with a number of agencies on its advertising and marketing business, including Havas Media Group, Journey Further and McCann Manchester.
In its most recent results, published in June last year, Matalan reported a 6% drop in revenues, while EBITDA jumped 92% year-on-year to £53m.
