Ocado offers Getir customers ‘five times the choice’

Ocado newOcado Retail has moved swiftly to lure former customers of the rapid grocery delivery service Getir in a new email marketing campaign offering them “the same smart shopping experience” but with “five times the choice”.

Getir announced its withdrawal from the UK market late last month, scrapping its European expansion plans, in a move that is set to result in the loss of around 1,500 jobs.

The firm is also expected to pull the plug on its remaining European operations in Germany and the Netherlands, having already departed from Italy and Spain. The withdrawals have been triggered by a major post-pandemic shift away from the online convenience market.

The Ocado campaign also offered “the best of M&S” plus a 25% off discount and free delivery on the shoppers first Zoom by Ocado order.

Customers of Gorillas, which was acquired by Getir in 2022, were told the service “won’t leave you hanging” and that “we’ve even bagged you 30% off your first shop and three months of free deliveries” with Zoom.

Emails were sent to all Getir and Gorillas’ opted-in customers, with those outside of Zoom’s coverage areas directed to Ocado.com instead. It is not known how the campaign skirted data protection regulations, as normally companies cannot use each other’s data without consent.

Ocado head of Zoom Gemma McIver told the Grocer magazine: “As Getir and Gorillas exit the UK, we’re pleased to be offering their customers a chance to try Zoom by Ocado. With a huge range of products, including M&S food, delivered in less than 60 minutes, we’re confident they’ll love the service.”
