Members of the Nectar loyalty scheme can now donate points to help support UK charities – from large brands, such as Macmillan Cancer Support and Alzheimer’s Research, to smaller grass-roots organisations, following a new deal with leading donations platform Crowdfunder.
Dubbed Nectar Donate, the programme will allow customers to donate points to a participating charity of their choice by simply logging on to the Nectar app; more than 100 organisations have signed up so far.
Once registered, customers can donate a minimum of 200 Nectar points (the equivalent of £1) to their chosen charity and with 18 million UK members, Nectar claims that up £250m worth of rewards will be eligible. There is a maximum donation limit of 1 million Nectar points per donation (the equivalent of £500).
The platform has been launched following research by the Sainsbury’s owned business which revealed most Nectar customers would like to donate their Nectar points to good causes. It also comes on the back of previous successful charity partnerships, such as Nectar’s 2020 campaign with Comic Relief which raised £1.7m.
Alzheimer’s Research UK chief executive Hilary Evans said: “We’re delighted that people can now support the important work of charities like Alzheimer’s Research UK through Nectar Donate.
“Despite the challenges of the last two years, we continue to be humbled by the generosity of the British public. One in two people know someone affected by dementia, so now more than ever, that support will help drive our research towards breakthroughs that change lives.”
Nectar head of loyalty and CRM Alex Naisby added: “We’re proud to have teamed up with Crowdfunder to launch Nectar Donate, a new and simple way for customers to support the charities and causes that they really care about with their Nectar points.
“Our customers have always been extremely generous whenever we have run charity donation campaigns in the past and we know that many of them are interested in supporting local charities.
“So, whether it’s donating those forgotten points or a bank of saved up points, we’re making it even easier for customers to turn their Nectar points into positivity.”
