Sainsbury’s drafts in chief to boost martech strategy

Sainsbury’s has further strengthened its marketing leadership with the appoinment of a new head of martech as the retailer continues to boost its digital transformation strategy.

Dave Cain takes up the role with immediate effect, having spent the past three and a half years as head of digital marketing at vehicle parts group LKQ UK & Ireland, responsible for the digital strategy, performance, operations and innovation, covering a range of channels and technology.

He has previously held digital roles at Arriva, Boots, and Studio-40.

Cain effectively succeeds former CACI and Merkle executive Nick Burns Laycock, who was promoted to Sainsbury’s head of CRM, loyalty and marketing technology last year.

In his new role, Cain will oversee the development and evolution of Sainsbury’s marketing technology capabilities, supporting data-driven marketing, customer engagement, and digital experiences across the business.

Ultimately, he will focus on enhancing the retailer’s martech ecosystem to help deliver more connected and personalised customer interactions.

Cain said: “Retail is moving faster than ever, and I’m delighted to join such an iconic brand to help drive the future of its martech ecosystem.”

Sainsbury’s works with both German tech giant SAP and Microsoft and is two years into its three-year “Next Level Sainsbury’s” strategy, to decrease general merchandise and clothing space but increase its food offering and investment in technology and artificial intelligence.

The Nectar loyalty scheme has been put at the forefront of the strategy, offering “more personalised, rewarding and integrated loyalty and market-leading retail media capabilities”.

In May, the retailer has recruited its first head of customer experience transformation to drive customer-centric technologies, and optimise physical and digital channels. Ian Boden-Dowds joined from BP.
