Tesco dumps Uber in fresh Clubcard Reward shake-up

uberTesco is pulling the plug on its deal with taxi hailing app Uber just 20 months after the firm joined the Clubcard Reward Partners programme in a much-hyped relaunch of the loyalty scheme.
It is not known what has sparked the decision, although the supermarket giant did carry out a review of the partnership after just three months when Transport for London stripped Uber of its licence to operate in the capital.
Clubcard customers will only be able to redeem their points for credit to spend on Uber journeys until July 10. Uber was not available for comment.
The move follows nearly 60 brands being axed from the partner programme in recent months, with at least two of the most popular deals – for train ticket site RedSpottedHanky and Europcar – being scrapped.
However, two weeks ago, Tesco chief executive Dave Lewis confirmed that the retail giant is to boost its investment in the Clubcard scheme as part of plans to add “more value and connectivity”.
Although exact details of the investment have not been released, it is understood that it will see the Clubcard app, which was relaunched in 2017, play a major role.
Tesco says it has seen a 34% increase in activity on its loyalty scheme – shoppers claiming or redeeming loyalty points – over the past year alone. This has been helped in part by the launch of the “faster vouchers” scheme, which allows customers to request vouchers online or via the Clubcard app without having to wait for the quarterly mailings to arrive.
At the time, Lewis said: “You’ll see more from us in the loyalty space. We have simplified and digitised the offer, now we can start to actually do more things with it.”
