Nectar set to launch digital version of ‘Clubcard Prices’

nectar 2If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then Tesco chiefs must be chuffed to bits with rival loyalty club Nectar, which is leaning heavily on “Clubcard Prices” to launch a scheme for Nectar app customers, offering discounts on their most frequently purchased Sainsbury’s products.

The company claims the programme, dubbed My Nectar Prices and launching next week, is the most advanced in the country, although, on the surface at least, it would appear to be a complete rip-off of the Tesco strategy.

Using the Nectar app, customers will be able to view their personal discounts and redeem them in store by checking out through Sainsbury’s self-scanning service, SmartShop.

Discounts are based on consumers’ shopping habits, meaning pre-existing digital Nectar customers will be offered discounts of up to 30% on products tailored to them.

Customers can also use their personal discounts across multiple purchases within the validation period, which ranges from one week to a few months depending on the offer.

My Nectar Prices works alongside Sainsbury’s Aldi Price Match discounts, and the company insists the programme could save a weekly Sainsbury’s shopper upwards of £200 a year.

Sainsbury’s chief marketing officer Mark Given said: “We’re always looking for new ways to offer our customers the best value and we’re thrilled to be launching My Nectar Prices.

“What’s great about My Nectar Prices is that customers’ discounts will be tailored to personally suit each shopper based on their previous shopping habits, meaning they will receive discounted prices on products they love and frequently use.”

The Clubcard Prices scheme was first launched to mark the retail giant’s 100th anniversary – in April 2019 – when Tesco offered discounts of up to 50% off on selected items. This was repeated just after Christmas 2020 with the launch of a huge January sale, with hundreds of deals and special prices for its 19 million Clubcard members and still running now.
